Issue 6: Securing the Essentials in a Turbulent World

A resource-mindful geopolitical strategy cannot
only be about de-risking and diversifying supply
sources. Instead, it must be also about shaping
a proactive global stance and magnifying
Europe’s own productive forces.

Overview

Acute geopolitical tensions are reshaping international relations and trade, with critical resources increasingly turned into weapons of global power. The days of Europe relying on cheap energy from Russia, affordable goods from China, and security from the United States are over. The EU, once the main beneficiary of the liberal order, now risks becoming its main loser, confronted with the collapse of its comfort zone and the urgent need for geopolitical maturity and long-term vision.

As global actors pursue aggressive and protectionist agendas, reliable access to essentials can no longer be assumed. Europe faces declining competitiveness, immediate security threats, demanding green and digital transitions, and demographic decline. In this turbulent context, securing the resources our economies and citizens need is becoming one of the EU’s greatest existential challenges.

This issue of Future Europe explores how the Union can move beyond de-risking and diversification towards a proactive global stance that strengthens its productive forces and builds resilient partnerships. Academics, policymakers, and industry leaders highlight the dilemmas, offer tangible solutions, and chart strategies for Europe to remain safe, prosperous, and influential in the years ahead.
